Home Β» Mexico Β» Vegan Restaurants San Miguel de Allende (13 Must-Try Places)

San Miguel de Allende is a great city in Mexico for foodies. From international cuisines to tacos to bakeries and lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Although I tried all vegan restaurants in San Miguel de Allende I found the best vegan food in restaurants with mixed options.

So keep reading to find out the 13 best places with vegan food in San Miguel de Allende 🀀

1. Raices Restaurante SMA

Raices Restaurante SMA (Roots) offers Mexican cuisine with great flavors at really good prices. It’s on the main road out of the city center and next to a busy street. But the food, service and prices are worth the walk.

Vegetarian options are marked with stars on the menu and are very easy to veganize when you ask without cheese or cream (sin queso o sin crema). The service is excellent and they are aware of food allergies too.

I can recommend the Bowl Azteca (145 pesos / 8 USD), Arepa (70 pesos / 3.5 USD), Amor Amarillo (70 pesos / 3.5 USD) and fresh Green Juice (Jugo verde, 40 pesos / 2 USD). All come served with fresh ingredients and are Instagram-worthy presented.

2. Inside Cafe

Inside Cafe is spread over three floors in the city center and offers a lot of vegan, gluten-free and healthy options. The food, service and view from the rooftop are excellent. It is definitely a vegan must-try restaurant in San Miguel.

Good to know: From 4 pm on Inside Cafe turns into an Asian restaurant. So make sure to come here for breakfast, brunch or lunch and get seated on the third or second floor for the best view.

I can recommend the Moroccan Sandwich, the Smash Sourdough Toast and the Veggie Vegan Bowl (all 142 pesos / 7 USD each). A nice touch is that you get served a glass jar with water for free.

3. Mama Mela

Mama Mela is a cute little burrito spot in the city center. The owner is great and will talk to you while preparing your food. It has only three seats in front of the kitchen so if it is busy it may be hard to get a seat.

Vegans can choose from 4 different fillings: Rajas con papas (poblano pepper with potatoes), champiΓ±ones (mushrooms), huitlacoche (mushrooms grown on corn) and calabaza (pumpkin). I asked for a mix and it was really good.

One of the things that make Mama Mela special is the tortillas you can choose for the burritos. The options are nopales (cactus paddles), chipotle and classic. They are all super tasty and give the burritos a unique flavor.

Each burrito is 80 pesos (4 USD) and comes with a little figure on top. In the restaurant is a map on which the owner asks you to pin your home country. Allan was his first guest from New Zealand and got a spot on Mama Melas Instagram wall. Cute!

4. La Raiz De La Tierra Vegan Restaurant San Miguel de Allende

La Raiz de la Tierra (The Root of the Earth) is a fully vegan restaurant in San Miguel de Allende. The menu is big and offers everything from homemade kombucha to vegan seafood to meat substitutes like the Beyond meat burger.

The restaurant is in the city center and very modern. We had great service and the food came fast.

We went for the Supreme nachos with potato cheese (120 pesos / 6 USD) and the Santa Fe burrito (115 pesos / 6 USD). The burrito was massive and great with hot sauce.

The nachos were good but we actually preferred the nachos from Sol Tribe Cuisine, which you will find later on this list of vegan restaurants in San Miguel de Allende. So keep reading πŸ™‚

5. Deli Q

Deli Q is a cute little restaurant with a shop, baked goods and healthy takeaway bar in Guadalupe. It’s a perfect stop when you explore this neighborhood, one of the top things to do in San Miguel de Allende.

We tried the homemade kombucha (30 pesos / 1.5 USD), the La Vida pretzel burger with a lentil patty (110 pesos / 5.5 USD), the vegan Gringo burrito (75 pesos / 4 USD) and the vegan chocolate oat bar (30 pesos / 1.5 USD). Tip: Ask for hot sauce, it’s great.

Everything was delicious and very affordable. Whatever you are craving, I am sure you will find it here.

πŸ‘©β€πŸ³ They also offer cooking classes, which you can check out here.

6. Jacques

We were on a hunt for falafel one day and found some at Jacques. Jacques is located close to the city center and has a nice seating area in a bright courtyard.

The street Jacques is located on is full of trees covered in flowers which are beautiful to take photos on.

Jacques is known for its healthy and fresh food and you will find a lot of vegan and gluten-free options on the menu.

We both had the falafel bowl for 169 pesos (8.5 USD) which was super good. Another great thing was that you get a free bottle of water which is common at restaurants in San Miguel.

7. Rustica

Rustica is located on the main road out of the city center and has a unique seating area. The owners of the restaurant took over a rundown building and turned it into a beautiful space to enjoy a meal.

Trees are growing out of the building and you will find new details of the place every time you go.

I can recommend the Middle East Tacos (130 pesos / 6.5 USD) and Monkey Fist Kombucha (55 pesos / 3 USD). There are lots of vegetarian and vegan options on the menu marked with a plant symbol.

8. Tortas Dolly

Tortas Dolly is very close to Rustica and is located on the same main road out of the city center. It has a big seating area and offers mainly tortas (sandwiches) of all kinds.

For vegans, there is only one option: The Torta Vegetariana without cheese (sin queso) for 70 pesos (3.5 USD).

I was skeptical at first but got surprised by the quality of the bread and the great flavor of the cooked and pickled veggies. The service is great and the price too.

Tortas Dolly is also very popular for takeaway or delivery. So if you are in for a cheap fast meal this is a great option.

9. Soltribe Cuisine Vegan Restaurant San Miguel de Allende

Soltribe Cuisine is a fully vegan restaurant in San Miguel de Allende in the San Antonio neighborhood. They used to be in the Guadalupe neighborhood and only open in the evening serving vegan snacks and pulque.

But they moved at the end of 2022 to a new location and rebranded from Soltribe Cantina to Soltribe Cuisine. This vegan restaurant is now open every day the whole day and serves delicious vegan breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We went for the vegan nachos (160 pesos / 8 USD) and vegan mushroom ceviche (130 pesos / 6.5 USD). Everything was excellent and we can highly recommend it.

The new location of Soltribe Cuisine is great for vegans too as it shares the space with Mercado Sano (Healthy Market). There you can get lots of fresh organic produce, sourdough bread, tofu and everything else your vegan heart desires.

10. Gyro’s San Miguel

Gyros San Miguel is a food truck with a big seating area and subtle Greek decorations. The portions are big and the owner who runs the place is nice.

The Gyros Falafel is the only vegan option on the menu but comes with vegan sauces which is a big plus and are very tasty. The fries are included in the price (100 pesos, 5 USD).

It’s for sure not the healthiest option on this list of vegan restaurants in San Miguel de Allende but a yummy treat.

11. Chill SMA

Chill SMA is a cute little restaurant in the San Rafael neighborhood. It’s run by a mother and daughter and set up in their garage with a big kitchen and nice decorations and furniture.

The service was excellent and we enjoyed their vegan pizzas. They make fresh smoothies and drinks too.

You can choose from two vegan pizzas called Vegetarian (still vegan, just has a variety of veggies on it) and Vegan Chill with avocados on top for 150 pesos / 7.5 USD each.

The pizzas came with tasty chili sauce and free table water which was a nice touch.

12. Pulques y Curados La Otomi y Crujizza

Pulques y Curados La Otomi is a cozy Mexican Pulqueria sharing a space with a pizzeria called Cruijizza. This means besides some typical Mexican dishes you can also order a pizza with your pulque.

It was our favorite go-to place in the evening in San Miguel and we enjoyed trying all the different pulque flavors such as strawberry, guava, natural, pineapple, and oats with cinnamon.

The pizza is tasty and cheap and added to the bar experience. If you ask for the Pizza Vegetariana without cheese (sin queso) you will get a fully vegan pizza.

A medium-sized pizza is 120 pesos (6 USD) and is big enough for one person. The family-size pizza is 190 pesos (9.5 USD) and is great for two people. You can also order half with cheese and half without if you share with a non-vegan.

13. El Manantial

El Manantial is a cantina that is another great afternoon or evening spot and is very popular with locals and tourists. It is one of the top recommended places to visit in San Miguel and has been in business since 1920.

This cantina is for sure not famous for its vegan options but when we went I found a great one: Chile de Aqua Relleno de Huitlacoche for 110 pesos (5.5 USD). This dish is vegan by default and a traditional one too.

You will get two poblano peppers stuffed with Huitlacoche. Which are mushrooms grown on corn that are a traditional food in Mexico. It’s delicious and a great vegan option when you visit this iconic bar.

  1. Really appreciate your list and the work that went into preparing it. I recently started whole food plant based eating and feel so much better for it. I am returning to SMA next year and will definitely check all the places you mentioned. Muchas gracias!

  2. Loved your list, well explained and very helpful.
Surprised that you didn’t include Don Taco Tequila, it’s probably the most popular vegan resto/bar in Centro.

    1. Hi Chris, thanks a lot, very happy to hear you liked it and that it was helpful! We went to Don Taco Tequila but we found it expensive and not that good. But we know many people do so maybe we have to give it another try πŸ™‚
